Attendance

Students are expected and required to attend class in accordance with educational laws and attend classes on a daily basis. The only legally excusable absences are for illness, medical or dental appointments, funerals, religious observance, or quarantine.

When a child has been absent for any reason, you may leave a message on the attendance secretary's voicemail (ext. 2965) or a note can be sent with the child when he/she returns to school and must be signed by a parent or guardian. If the school is not contacted by the parent, the absence/tardy will be marked as “unexcused.”

Absences must be reported to the Attendance Secretary within 48 hours of the absence. Parents can call on the day of the absence, send a note, or email the secretary (elizabeth.medina@konoctiusd.org). Absences not verified within 48 hours will be recorded as unexcused absences. Please make all possible efforts to keep the school informed when your child is absent or tardy.

An unexcused absence/tardy due to a parent forgetting to call or follow up with the school will remain an unexcused absence/tardy. This can be frustrating, as our attendance records later may be such that your student is unable to attend a school activity or function that includes an attendance requirement. In this situation, the burden does fall on the parent, though the student may be the one who ends up with the consequence. This is the parent’s ownership in such a case and not the school’s fault. In order to avoid this scenario, please keep the school up to date on any attendance/tardy issues. It is the parent's responsibility to see that children attend school and maintain proper attendance. We will maintain accurate attendance records and notify parents/guardians if their child is absent or tardy.

Students with good attendance records generally achieve higher grades, enjoy school more, and are more likely to be employed following graduation.

In order for students to succeed, regular school attendance is extremely important. Accordingly, we have set a goal of 95% positive attendance for every student, and excessive absences can have a negative impact on a student’s field trip and activity privileges. Students are responsible to be on time, which means being in the place, time, and manner requested by the teacher, including, but not limited to, the beginning of each class. Being on time is an important component of the culture of trust, respect, and responsibility, and sends the message of, “I respect your time.”

Office Hours

The School office is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.

You can reach one of our secretaries by phone by calling (707) 994-6447. If there is no answer, please leave a voicemail and we will get back to you as quickly as we can.

Attendance Procedures

  • Be in your seat when class the second tardy bell rings.
  • Obtain a pass from the office before entering class if you are tardy.
  • Students who are attending activities (athletics, dances, job shadows, internships, etc.) must attend school on the day of the activity, or the day prior to the activity if the activity falls on a non-school day.
  • It is the student’s responsibility to get make-up work following an absence. Speak with your teacher immediately upon your return to school following an absence and make sure you are aware of your teacher’s policy on make-up work.
  • Contact us if you are having issues with transportation or anything that impacts attendance. We want to work with you before small problems become large problems.

Tardy Policy

Three or more tardies in a week will result in lunch detention.

Five or more tardies in a week will result in an after-school detention.

Any further cuts during the same week will result in after-school detention.

If bussing is not available, parents are responsible for transportation.

Requirement for Athletic Eligibility and Participation in School Activities

Students must attend school to be eligible to participate in after-school athletics and school activities.

Students are considered tardy up to the point that they are 30 minutes late. After this point in time, they are considered absent.

For participation purposes, students may miss up to two periods during a regular day and one period on shortened Thursday collaboration days as long as the absence is doctor- or dentist-verified. Students lacking such verification are ineligible for sports that day.

Students must attend the entire day on minimum days in order to participate.

Pre-arranged Absences for School Functions

Pre-arranged forms signed by parents and teachers are necessary for all extracurricular activities that require students to miss classes.

Teachers and coaches will provide students with these forms. Such forms must be submitted to the attendance office by 3:00 pm one day prior to the activity. There are no exceptions to this rule.

Parents must sign both parts of this pre-arranged form in order for their child to participate. If two or more teachers deny student participation in the pre-arranged function, the student will be unable to participate in the extra-curricular activity.

Pre-arranged Absences for Non-school Events

If your child needs to be absent from school for 5 or more days and you would like to arrange a Short-term Independent Study Contract, please contact the counselor no less than one week prior to the absence.
