Social Media Night @ Obsidian Middle School:
Last Wednesday, October 18th, we had our Social Media Night/ Adults Only. We did not have many parents show up but we had the Superintendent of Konocti, Clear Lake Chief of Police, Probation, and the Konocti School Resource Officer. There was a lot of valuable information given and the conversation amongst our community members was inclusive and transparent. The benefits of the parents, the school, and the community coming together to decrease social media issues, and increase engagement and learning at Obsidian Middle School is vital to the success of our students. Our students will no longer be using their cell phones at school so knowing the effects of "phone detox" is good for all involved. After doing some research, it became clear that there are both positive and negative effects to our students leaving their cell phones for the whole day.
Positive Effects:
- Improved Focus: Without constant notifications, students may find it easier to concentrate on their studies.
- Better Social Skills: Face-to-face interactions could improve, enhancing social skills and emotional intelligence.
- Reduced Screen Time: This could lead to reduced eye strain and better sleep quality.
- Increased Physical Activity: Less time on phones could encourage more outdoor activities and exercise
- Reduced Anxiety: Social media often induces stress and anxiety; absence might alleviate these feelings
Negative Effects:
- Communication Gap: Students might find it difficult to stay in the loop with friends and family.
- Inconvenience: Many educational and organizational tasks are done via apps, so detoxing could cause inconvenience.
- FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out): Anxiety could increase due to a fear of missing out on social media trends or news.
- Initial Resistance: Kids might resist the change, leading to tension in family or classroom settings.
- We will continue this conversation as we move forward towards a cell phone free school.
