May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

One of the reasons America is such a remarkable country is because we incorporate skills, knowledge, and traditions from cultures all over the world. The month of May marks Asian American and Pacific American Heritage Month, which celebrates the histories and contributions of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders. The term Asian refers to the many diverse cultures that hail from the Asian continent, including East Asia, Southeast Asia, and South Asia. The Pacific Islands include Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia.

We celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in May because it commemorates the immigration of the first Japanese people to the United States in May of 1843 and because it recognizes Golden Spike Day (May 10, 1869), which marked the completion of the transcontinental railroad that was built with significant contributions from Chinese workers.
