Highlands Academy Families,

Awards Assembly

We were sorry to have to postpone last week’s Awards Assembly. We moved it to this Thursday at 2:30 in the Highlands Honors Room. You will be notified if your child is receiving an award.

Report Cards

Report cards have been printed and are being mailed home tomorrow morning. Expect to receive your child’s report card by the end of the week.

Online Safety

We all want our kids to have a positive online experience, so it's important we monitor their social media activity to protect them from online bullies.

First let's discuss what makes cyber bullying so vicious.

Cyberbullying vs. In-Person Bullying:

  • 24/7 Presence: Cyberbullying is like a persistent shadow, extending beyond school hours.

  • Anonymous Attacks: Perpetrators can hide behind screens, making it tougher to identify them.

  • Digital Footprint: Online actions leave a lasting trail, affecting victims even after the incident.

Here are some tips to identify and protect your child from bullying via social media.

Spotting Signs:

  • Emotional changes: Keep an eye on sudden mood swings or unexplained anxiety.

  • Avoiding devices: If they're steering clear of their usual online activities, it might be a red flag.

  • Social withdrawal: Notice a shift in their social interactions or reluctance to discuss online experiences.

What You Can Do:

  • Open Communication: Create a safe space for your child to share their online experiences without fear of judgment.

  • Stay Informed: Keep up with the latest apps and platforms your child is using. Awareness is key!

  • Set Boundaries: Establish clear guidelines on device usage and appropriate online behavior.

  • Monitoring Tools: Use parental controls or monitoring apps to keep tabs on their online interactions.

  • Report & Block: Teach them how to report and block malicious users. Empower them with the tools to take control.

Site Council

Our next School Site Council meeting is Thursday, April 25, 2024 at 4:00 in the Carle’ library. We now have four parents that have agreed to attend on a regular basis, but more parents are welcome to attend.

Sincerely,
