5/6/2024 Weekly Principal's Message

Kidsfest flier

A Message From Principal Serpa:

This week is our official start to state testing. The CAASPP is administered to students in grades 3-6 in Language Arts and Mathematics. The 5th graders also take a Science Assessment. Students often ask, “Why do we have to take these tests?” The answer is long, but there are many reasons. Among them are to measure student progress and influence decisions. For example, last year most students scored “below standard” in English Language Arts, therefore we have implemented a remediation program called Corrective Reading that takes place for 45 minutes daily. Imagine what we could do with this time if all students were at grade level! So, parents please help us by having a conversation with your child about the importance of doing their best.

Minimum Day:

Thursday, May 9th is a minimum day. School gets out at 12:42. The after school program will be open until 6:00 for those already enrolled. Please be on time picking up your children as we have Staff Development meetings and our staff need to leave campus to attend.

After School Program:

It’s time to start thinking about next year’s after school program. The ASP runs until 6:00 daily. They do all sorts of fun activities as well as provide homework support. Students must be pre registered to attend. If you would like your child to attend the program please use this link to register. You must sign up every year. The program fills up quickly. Spots are filed on a first come basis. If you have any questions about the program please reach out to Lora Anderson ext. 2585

Talent Show:

Our annual talent show will take place on May 30th following Open House. Auditions will take place on May 15th after school in the library. All grade levels are welcome to participate. Keep an eye out for permission slips that will be sent home tomorrow. Attending the show is free and will take place on the blacktop.

Keep Well Kids Club:

On Thursday, May 9th we will have a Keep Well Kids Club celebration in the cafeteria at 10:30. Students in 2nd grade will gather with the author of the program, Joan Jacobs, to share their experiences and receive their final reward. Parents are welcome to attend. For more information on the Keep Well Kids Club visit their website at https://www.keepwellkidsclub.com

Ag & Natural Resource Day:

Third graders will be venturing to Lakeport on Wednesday, May 8th for the countywide Agriculture and Natural Resource Day. Students will explore a variety of vendors, learn about resources in our county, and do some hands-on activities.

Attendance:

We finished our April attendance challenge. Only 224 out of 559 students had 95% attendance or better for the month. That’s so very sad. The students who met the goal will receive a certificate from Gaytan Market for a free taco. Winners of the fire tables / games will be announced tomorrow.
